havent seen this discussed yet but– the “best content first” system that social media sites have tended towards exists because that’s the system that caters to advertisers the most. it’s very appealing to advertisers because it gives them a pretense to pay for their content to be first. that’s why so many sites, including tumblr, are shifting to that format despite how unpopular and inconvenient it is.
